In the context of mycology, nematophagy refers to fungi consuming nematodes to boost nitrogen intake. This study reviews saprotrophic Agaricales, revealing that while Hohenbuehelia mastrucata, Pleurotus citrinopileatus, and P. djamor trap nematodes, structures in Stropharia rugosoannulata and Coprinus comatus, previously thought to trap nematodes, might serve a defensive role against fungivory.
Pleurotus djamor, a nutraceutical mushroom, exhibits promising anticoccidial effects against Eimeria spp. in rabbits. In vitro, a 10 µg/ml mycelium extract reduced viable oocysts to 30.3%. In vivo, an 80 µg/kg dose achieved a 74.4% parasite load reduction by day 5. These findings highlight P. djamor's potential as a therapeutic agent for rabbit coccidiosis.
Ganoderma lucidum-derived endophyte Talaromyces sp. GLQ04 has yielded seven novel metabolites, alongside four known compounds. Structural analysis using spectroscopy and ECD led to separating two enantiomeric pairs via chiral HPLC. Notably, compounds 6, 7, and 8 demonstrated cytotoxicity against diffuse large B-cell lymphoma cells, with IC50 values of 10.68 μM, 61.04 μM, and 17.12 μM, respectively.
Pure mycelium materials (PMMs) are derived from the fungal cultivation of Trametes versicolor and Irpex lacteus using lignocellulose-rich agricultural processing water. These PMMs, enhanced with glycerol, exhibit superior mechano-physical properties to synthetic counterparts. They demonstrate a similar thermal profile and density to low density polyethylene, indicating potential for sustainable packaging solutions.
